Leviticus 16-17

Are your sins atoned for?

In Leviticus 16-17 we see the instructions for the Day of Atonement. This was a big day in the life of Israel, as it was the one day out of the year where the high priest got to enter the Most Holy place (Holy of Holies).

Why did he get to go in? Because he was making atonement for both himself and the people of Israel, covering their sins for the year. It was this sacrificial process of shedding blood that allowed Israel to remain in fellowship with the Lord. Like Hebrews 9:22 tells us: “under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

There was a problem with this sacrifice. The person offering it was sinful (hence needing to make his own sacrifice before making one for the people), and it had to be done year after year.

But, the beauty of this day is that it points us to Jesus. It points to our need for a better high priest & sacrifice, which Jesus was able to be. He is the perfect once and for all sacrifice that gives us permanent & unfiltered access to God.

Thank Jesus today for his sacrifice that brought you into fellowship with God.
