Are you heeding wisdom’s call?
If we want to know what it looks like to lead a godly life, we need to look no further than the book of Proverbs. In this book, king Solomon shows us the characteristics of a godly person who lives according to God’s ways through short memorable statements.
What is a proverb? I like to break it down this way “Pro Verbs.” The pro- prefix means something is good or positive. Verbs are things we do. So, a proverb is a “good word” or “good thing to do.” In essence, proverbs are short pithy statements that are generally true when followed. But, please note, they are not promises. Proverbs are not ironclad, but are only true in a general sense. There is no guarantee its outcome will be true in your own life. But, they are still words to be followed nonetheless.
The book of Proverbs (chapters 1-2) begins with the importance of wisdom in the life of the godly, contrasting it with foolish sinners who ignore wisdom. We are shown that wisdom is our shield & strength against wickedness. Likewise, it is also the source of our blessing.
Throughout Proverbs, wisdom is personified as a woman whose words we should follow. Wisdom is the Word of God brought to life. This truth points us forward to Jesus Christ, who is the Word of God in the flesh, and the son who perfectly lives out the book of Proverbs.
