Have you broken your silence?
As Malachi came to a close, there was a lingering hope. Elijah was to come before the great day of the Lord. But after Malachi spoke there were 400-500 years of silence. No other prophetic words were given. But now Luke writes to tell us that this day is nigh!
The angel Gabriel tells Zechariah that he and his wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son. This son will come in the spirit of Elijah and turn the hearts of the people to God, preparing them for the Lord’s arrival. Malachi’s words are finally coming to pass! Not only that, but Gabriel tells a young virgin named Mary that she will give birth to the long awaited Messiah, the Son of God.
After centuries of silence, there is light! There is hope! Salvation is coming! At John’s birth Zechariah prophesies glorious words. God has visited his people and redeemed them. He has brought salvation. The promises God made are being fulfilled! And his son will prepare the way for all this to happen! God is merciful and gracious!
With the words of Gabriel and the subsequent words of praise from Mary and Zechariah, we can see the hope that comes with the gospel. God has delivered on his promise to come to his people and it’s a great day!
Today, meditate on this passage and think about the hope that these words bring to your soul. How do they encourage your faith?
