Are you walking in step with the Spirit?
You know, legalists make a good argument. For most of us, if we’re going to live the Christian life well we need a set of rules to follow. We need to know what to do, what not to do, and when to do it. Grace alone is a license to live a sin-filled life. Yet, in Galatians 4-6, Paul dismantles this challenge to grace-filled living.
Paul’s response? Jesus Christ died to set us free from sin & death, as well as bondage to the law. Through Christ believers are freed from the law to live a life filled with faith and grace. And, no, this does not lead to living however we please. We now have the Holy Spirit who made us alive and gave us a new heart and affections. No longer do we live according to our flesh, but we walk in step with the Holy Spirit. When we do this, we grow in spiritual maturity and manifest the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
In addition to this, Paul argues that no one has been able to keep the law anyway, so why add that burden on others? Let us live lives that are in line with the Holy Spirit’s leading, as we love others like we love ourselves. As Christians we do well when we love God and people (Galatians 5:14).
Today, examine your life. Are you walking according to the leading of the Holy Spirit? Does your life exhibit the fruit of the Spirit? If not, ask God to help you walk closer to him.
