1 Corinthians 13-14
Paul continues his argument on how spiritual gifts ought to be used by believers. First and foremost, it all must be done in love. Without love, it is all meaningless. And with that, when we act in love and use our gifts, the motivation should be for the edification and building up of the church. Anything we say and do should have that as its end goal.
So much of what the Corinthian church did was selfish and self-serving. It was about self, and not about their brother or sister. This thinking is prevalent in society today, and this verse is a reminder that it’s not about us. The gifts God gives us are for others, specifically to build his church. So, if we’re not using it for that purpose, we might as well sit down.
