2 Kings 2
In 1 Kings 19 the Lord told Elijah the end of his life and prophetic ministry were near. Now it is time for that to take place. Elijah goes on a journey to several cities and tells Elisha to stay each time. Elisha refuses and continues with Elijah. After asking for a double portion inheritance of Elijah’s spirit, the Lord takes up Elijah in a whirlwind of fire. Afterward, Elisha takes up the mantle and affirms that he has taken over Elijah’s prophetic ministry.
The big takeaway for this passage is the Lord’s work to confirm Elisha as a prophet in Israel. God told Elijah in 1 Kings 19:16 that Elisha would succeed him as prophet in Israel. The Lord confirms this in many ways. First, in the visible manner by which he took Elijah to heaven. Second by the parting of the Jordan River. Finally by both events of his blessing the water and cursing the children. In the same way God confirmed his word and promise to Elisha, we can trust that God is still that promise keeping God today.
